Cellular Jail, Port Blair – Pay Homage to Great Indian Rebels

Visit here to pay homage to India’s freedom fighters such as Veer Sawarkar and Batukeshwar Dutt who struggled hard for country’s independence. Once known as ‘Kala Pani’—the most dreadful name for Indians, Cellular Jail in port Blair is now a popular tourist spot where patriotic sentiments of Indians raise high. The main complex of the jail was constructed between 1896 and 1906, though it had been used by British to immure the Indian rebels immediate aftermath of the freedom-fight of 1857.

Architectural design of this grand construct is really impressive and so devilishly planned that can leave you wondering how a human being can be so cruel. The three storey building has seven wings with a tower in the center that served as the intersection. This tower was used by guards to keep eyes on prisoners. There was a large gong in the tower that was used to raise alarm for any contingency. There are 693 cells with size of 13.5x7.5 feet. These solitary cells are made in such a way that each cell faces the back of next cell, so the inmate could not communicate with any other. They all were in solitary confinement, and that’s why the prison is called the ‘Celular Jail’.

When you visit this marvelous historical attraction, you would definitely feel proud to be an Indian. Photographs of martyrs and a brief history of their activities will let you know thrilling past of this jail. Visit to the museum in the jai would provide you deep insight of harassments and living style forcefully given to the prisoners.
